D.I.S.Co. Method ® for the artist
What are the abilities and resources that all artists in entertainment would like to have to get the best performance? Expressiveness and the ability to communicate, to convey emotions and evoke moods and feelings through their personal interpretation; the ability to amaze and involve the public through their “easy”, flowing use of the “body-voice instrument” (and/or the musical instrument), which guarantees precision in the execution of the performance; the capacity to show they feel pleasure in using their bodies or their voices, free from pain or difficulty; the creativeness to produce new events and experiences; good staying power and the ability to recover from fatigue and stress, as well as controlling personal emotions… Finally, all artists aim at realising their personal potential to the full, because they know that this is what both their gratification and the satisfaction of the public they are performing for depends on.
The D.I.S.Co. Method®, dedicated expressly to artists in entertainment, provides support and new instruments to aid both expressive research and that psycho-physical balance that guarantees the best possible artistic performance. It is directed in particular towards actors, dancers, musicians, singers, presenters and those who practice amateur and competitive sporting activities in which artistic expression takes on an important role, like, for example, artistic skating, ice dancing, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics, etc.
Breathing is the starting point of the D.I.S.Co. Method® to penetrate the universe of the body in action, and explore various forms of perception, coordination, movement, muscular tone, rhythm, voice timbre and tone, etc., to eliminate those restrictions (physical, emotional, mental, perceptive or coordinative) which limit total expression of personal capacity, or reduce them to a minimum. In short, the D.I.S.Co. Method® is a way of training the artist and expanding his knowledge and use of his personal resources, optimising them to increase the level and quality of his performance.
In practice…
An artist in entertainment, whether actor, dancer, singer, musician or conductor, needs a body and a voice free from restrictions, devoid of chronic body tension that could cause pain, limitations or difficulty of both movement and voice emission, swelling, chronic fatigue, etc., which might limit his expressiveness. Such restrictions, (whether) caused by prolonged stress, physical or emotional traumas, surgical operations, excessive strain, incorrect habits relating to posture and movement, might in time generate real and proper dysfunctions against the entire psycho-physical structure.
In fact, bad habits, just like significant and minor physical and emotional traumas, are able to generate restrictions which, in the course of time, influence body movement and expressiveness. Some activities keep our bodies under lop-sided pressure (just think of the study of some musical instruments like the violin or the flute), and sometimes the way we move or speak is indiscernibly influenced by habits acquired at certain times and “fixed” in patterns that, if constantly repeated, can easily lead to dysfunctions. Habits are like paths we have travelled thousands of times; we let ourselves be attracted by them because we know them well, but sometimes it would be valuable to try out others, completely new ones, in order to conquer new horizons. In any case it is always constructive to find one or two alternative solutions to consolidated habits and let our bodies travel along new paths to allow us to enrich our expressive capacities. The aim is to reach the utmost freedom both physical, in awareness and skill, and emotional and mental, so that the originality of our voices and bodies can manifest itself unrestrictedly, evoking every single meaningful nuance to communicate to the public. Of course, talking about the body and about “physical-ness”, I’m actually referring to that device which permits us to reveal every single thought, emotion and feeling, and which transforms all our experiences into the understanding, knowledge and awareness we have acquired. The D.I.S.Co. Method® is specifically dedicated to those artists who are in the entertainment business, with the aim of providing a safeguard and new tools to reinforce both the study of expressiveness and that psycho-physical balance that guarantees a top quality artistic and interpretative performance, beginning with those gestures that constitute the basis of the way we live and operate, like the act of breathing.
The importance of functional breathing
Every role an actor plays is characterised by a particular way of breathing and by a singular way of behaving, posture, gestures, movements, rhythms and voice and body expressiveness, all depending on breathing. Restoring full breathing and establishing habits fit for the activities we carry out and for our individual needs is a must for our personal well-being, as well as the key to body-mind integration and to the intensification of expressiveness, since moving, speaking and singing are made possible thanks to breathing. Sometimes we can recognise a person’s customary way of breathing, for example, in his chest or abdomen, and we have to remember that each one of us has his “story”, that is expressed in a physical and personality structure with habits by which it is identified. Consequently, each one of us has his own personal way of breathing which might or might not correspond to his real needs and which could be improved and adapted to his expressive needs.
Working on breathing, on the voice, on the universe of the body in movement through the D.I.S.Co Method®, permits the investigation of a new approach to awareness, to coordination, to movement, to muscular tone, to rhythm, etc., to remove or reduce those body and voice restrictions, emotional and mental which prevent us from recognising and expressing our abilities. In other words, through the D.I.S.Co Method® we can achieve a real prospect of intensifying and optimising our awareness and the use of our personal resources.
In particular …
The D.I.S.Co. Method® dedicated to the artist can also be used for prevention or even intervention concerning psycho-physical tension, a feeling of limited movement, joint or muscular pain, difficulty in controlling emotions, and other symptoms connected with stress. It is particularly suitable for:
- extending the range of instruments of expression
- acquiring a better perceptive capacity and greater freedom in voice use and movement coordination
- improving and optimising the knowledge and use of personal abilities
- developing new creative and expressive capacity
- treating muscular tension and pain
- recovering from physical and emotional traumas
- developing efficient habits of breathing, posture and movement
- improving control of expression of emotions and feelings
- controlling stress
- tolerating habit changes (like, for example, giving up smoking)
Le sessioni sono individuali e possono durare da 1 a 3 ore.
